Donald Byrd: The Session Musicians

Donald Byrd: The Session Musicians

A supremely accomplished bandleader, Donald Byrd was equally agile in the role of sideman. He and his trumpet offered spirited solos (Horace Silver's “Señor Blues”) and elegant collaborative work on harmonies (Herbie Hancock's “Blind Man, Blind Man”). The aptly named “Sweet Sapphire Blues” gives a taste of his four albums with Coltrane in the late ‘50s, and he soars with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers on the stately, cruising “Nica's Dream”.
