Hamburg rapper Disarstar’s contemplative rhythms and rhymes are haunting and all-consuming. He lays his incisive, poignant urban tales over brooding hooks, looped vocals and seemingly impenetrable blocks of beats. His 2017 hit album MINUS x MINUS = PLUS includes caustic anti-consumerist chant “Konsum” alongside “Für Dich”, a homage to a worldly metropolis under fascist threat. But harmonious choruses and romantic hymns also have a place in the spitter’s output. In his 2020 LP Klassenkampf & Kitsch, the fervent political activist and the penetrating melodist make peace.
