Tunisian singer, composer and oud player Dhafer Youssef transcends time and space as the artist twists tradition into barrier-breaking jazz. Youssef's majestic vocal crescendos are avant-garde calls to prayer, driving metropolitan grooves that hybridise Sufism, jazztronica and funk. Middle Eastern vibes are interwoven with classical strings in the 2006 release Divine Shadows, while 2011’s Abu Navas Rhapsody dips into Persian poetry. In the album’s intro “Sacré "The Wine Ode Suite"”, roaming piano keys are pierced by a haunting, shrill call—proof that Youssef doesn't shy away from a fearless leap forward.
