Devilskin Essentials

The founding members of Devilskin had all played in other high-profile heavy bands before forming the Aotearoa New Zealand quartet in 2010. That likely accounts for both their versatility and immediacy, spiking steely alt-metal riffing with elements of hard rock and pop while sliding easily between brooding verses and wide-open choruses. Vocalist Jennie Skulander imparts an inherent sense of drama, whether she’s cleanly projecting for a stadium audience or breaking into a more cathartic scream. After laying the groundwork with their 2014 debut album We Rise, Devilskin intensified their delivery on 2016’s New Zealand Music Award-winning Be Like the River and 2020’s even meatier Red without losing the melodic swell of anthems like “Voices”—including Tony Vincent’s stratospheric soloing. Bassist Paul Martin and his drummer son Nic, who joined the band while still just 15 years old, provide the steadfast rhythm section for Skulander and Vincent’s two-fold attack. And while plenty of moments veer into radio-friendly territory, Devilskin has retained its capacity for the kind of high-impact outbursts first heard on tracks like 2014’s “Elvis Presley Circle Pit.”
