Def Leppard's early ‘80s ascension was perfectly timed with the rise of music video. The camera ate up their rock ‘n' roll swagger, Union Jack muscle shirts and shorts, and the piercing gaze of singer Joe Elliott. The Sheffield band already had the sticky licks and pop choruses fully formed, but bolstered with outrageous performance clips (“Pour Some Sugar On Me”) or the image of Elliott wielding Excalibur like a hair-metal messiah (“Rock of Ages”), Def Leppard catapulted to new levels of fame.
