Declan McKenna Essentials

Declan McKenna’s sharp indie-pop is a little bit breezy and a whole lot brazen, but it’s also socially conscious, politically charged, and unabashedly real. The English singer/songwriter has been proudly headstrong from the start, releasing his 2015 debut single, “Brazil,” a sun-soaked indie-pop diatribe against corruption at the World Cup, at age 16. Since, he’s touched on transgender rights (“Paracetamol”), perpetual war (“British Bombs”), and the undervalued power of youth (“The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home”), while continuing to push his own musical limits with effects-laden, Bowie-inspired glam rock on 2020’s Zeros.
