Dead Obies Essentials

Quebec MCs are often torn between rapping in French to authentically rep their local culture or using English to court a national audience. But since forming in 2011, Dead Obies have shown you can have it both ways. Like a bilingual Wu-Tang Clan, the Montreal crew are a glorious collision of outsized personalities and gritty street spirit. On early singles like “Tony Hawk”, their irreverent energy and rapid-fire repartee channelled the raw aggression of hardcore punk. But over the years, they've fined-tuned their approach—see the synth-spiked club grinder “Where They @” or the after-hours R&B of “Doo Wop”—without sacrificing the attitude.
