California's Dawes have studied their folky antecedents well; they have more than their fair share of elegant, loping harmony-fests (see "When You Call My Name" or the stripped-down "Someone Will"). But their songbook is filled with moments that bend folk music's rules, from the epic, Brian May-like guitar solo cutting through "Peace in the Valley" to the bouncing synths that underpin "One of Us."
