Nobody embraced the '70s outlaw-country ideal with more gusto than David Allan Coe. He looked more like a biker than a cowboy, but he was country down to the bone, and on rough 'n' ready anthems like "Longhaired Redneck" and "Willie, Waylon and Me," the ornery ex-con sounded like he was prepared to take a boot to anyone who dared to suggest otherwise. But that didn't stop him from turning out tender ballads like "Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone)" when the crooning spirit caught his fancy.
