Daria Zawiałow’s sleek electronic pop sounds are both classic and futuristic. Beneath the Polish singer/songwriter’s nervy, ’80s-inspired synths and guitars runs an undercurrent of unease. On the 2017 single “Malinowy Chruśniak”, she sings darkly of chills, sweat, and fire; on “Hej Hej!”, from 2019’s Helsinki, allusions to shame and tears shadow electrifying New Wave riffs. Her 2021 album Wojny i Noce’s anthemic title track is even more energetic; it would be right at home soundtracking a retro sci-fi movie about superheroes, evil villains and utopian dreams.
