As frontman for ‘90s alt-rock faves The Presidents of the United States of America, Chris Ballew wrote songs that were steeped in whimsical humor, but since 2009, he’s fully embraced his inner child as kids entertainer Caspar Babypants. Ballew can engage a group of toddlers with participatory acoustic sing-alongs (“Run Baby Run”) and jaunty animal-infested tales (“My Flea Has Dogs”), but his recordings also bear artful touches, like his harpsichord-kissed riff on “Ba Ba Black Sheep.” And with a Tinkertoy keyboard and bouncing-ball beat, he can transform a classic like The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” into perfect circle-time fodder.
