Busby Marou Essentials

When Busby Marou emerged from Rockhampton in 2007, they did so with their core musical elements already in place–witness the breezy acoustic guitars and sun-dappled vocal harmonies of that year’s “Underlying Message.” Though they’ve embellished that blueprint over time with more full-blooded percussion (“Getaway Car”) and even the odd modern production flourish (the booming bass of the celebratory “Lucky Stars”), at the heart of each song are the entwined vocals of Thomas Busby and Jeremy Marou. Despite their laidback musical stylings, the duo’s lyrics don’t always steer clear of troubled waters, with the buoyant “Over Drinking Over You” essaying the moment heartbreak turns a fondness for drinking into a dependence. With Marou a proud Torres Strait Islander, their cover of Paul Kelly and Troy Cassar-Daley’s “Lonesome but Free” was a highlight of the Deadly Hearts 2 compilation; their cover of Crowded House’s “Better Be Home Soon” an indication of their melodic inspirations.
