BoDeans Essentials

With their heartland earnestness and scruffy demeanor, BoDeans helped foment the roots rock boom of the '80s. Signing to the punk label Slash in 1985, the Wisconsin outfit asserted themselves with gobs of twangy guitar chime and piston-pounding backbeats. “Fadeaway” marries Kurt Neumann and Sam Llanas' drawled harmonies to a prickly, Johnny Cash-like two-step. On “Only Love,” showcasing the band's melancholic romanticism, they beef up their sound with big, cycling riffs. Adopting an alt-rock edge for the 1993 hit “Closer to Free,” they offer up a rich, hypnotic meditation on independence.
