Best Coast Essentials

Combining the sugary hooks of classic '60s girl groups like The Ronettes and The Crystals with surf guitars and lo-fi indie-rock production, Best Coast was initially lumped in with the chillwave movement of the late-2000s. (Self explanatory singles like “The Sun Was High (And So Was I)” may have had something to do with that.) But with the release of 2010's Crazy For You, Best Coast cut through the haze with a garage-rockin' urgency, while the ambitious 2012 follow-up, The Only Place, saw Bethany Cosentino and co. hooking up with producer Jon Brion to bring latent country and soft-rock influences to the fore. Their 2015 release, California Nights, found the band evolving once again, with a distorted pop crunch reminiscent of '90s alt-icons The Breeders.
