Bahamas Essentials

Even if you didn't know it, you've heard Afie Jurvanen before; the multifaceted Toronto musician has lent his fluid guitar playing to the likes of Feist, Jason Collett, and Howie Beck. But as Bahamas, Jurvanen's solo work rivals the graceful, sophisticated indie pop of any of his collaborators. Launching his career with Pink Strat in 2009, Jurvanen revealed his generous gifts as a songwriter, delivering tunes of glowing warmth and heartbreaking honesty in a sandy, sleepy voice. (It also got him a deal with Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records label.) Over the course of the two full-length albums that followed—2012's Barchords and 2014's Bahamas is Afie—Jurvanen continued to craft evermore poignant songs, alternating between complex, string-accompanied arrangements and openhearted acoustic simplicity. Ready for a trip through the catalog of Bahamas? It's every bit as dreamy as the name suggests.
