Azúcar Moreno Essentials

As the duo Azúcar Moreno, the Salazar sisters—Toñi and Encarna—came determined to alter the Spanish music landscape. Theirs is an uptempo brew of flamenco and pop that grew more adventurous and club-friendly as they developed in the ’80s. In 1990, the house-fuelled “Bandido” was catapulted from the Eurovision stage to international dance floors in a whirlwind of tecno-rumba that put the cantaoras’ Romani roots to the fore. Veering into R&B, mambo, disco and dancehall, the siblings have delivered LPs such as 1996’s hit Esclava de Tu Piel, with vocal acrobatics exploring fresh emotional depths and vibrant crossover rhythms to keep feet moving.
