At Home With Tyler Joseph From Twenty One Pilots: The Playlist

“I hope we don't lose the ability to interact with strangers and form these connections with people we barely know,” Tyler Joseph says about self-isolating during the pandemic. “My grandfather, who passed away a few years ago—one of his amazing strengths was his ability to just strike up a conversation with a stranger. I learned a lot from him.” The twenty one pilots frontman and his bandmates were in the last leg of their Bandito world tour supporting 2018’s Trench when lockdowns began; several dates were canceled. Hunkered down at home, Joseph has maintained a regular routine of writing and recording music. He didn’t hesitate to release twenty one pilots' hopeful new single “Level of Concern,” which he started writing right after his mom casually mentioned she needed some upbeat music to get her mind off the news. On this exclusive Apple Music playlist curated by Joseph himself, he highlights songs that have helped him get through, featuring artists like Ben Folds, Jónsi, Matisyahu, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, whose 2006 track “Your Guardian Angel” was the first song Joseph performed publicly, at one of his high school assemblies. “Man, what a song to try to sing in front of people for the first time,” he says. “I'll never forget driving to school the day of the performance and just singing my heart out in my car, getting there, trying to practice and warm up.”
