At Home With Pentatonix: The Playlist

Pentatonix is looking forward to taking a break this holiday season before taking on some new challenges in 2021. “I feel so grateful that we get this bus stop to take a break and feel a little joy and have a little family time before whatever next year brings,” Pentatonix baritone singer Scott Hoying tells Apple Music. “We definitely felt the weight of everything [this year] and the fact that we're five very different individuals that can still come together and be one unit.” As the a cappella group prepares for the release of their eighth album The Lucky Ones, due out February 2021, Pentatonix curated an exclusive Apple Music playlist of songs that tap into different sides of their personalities. “We're all so vastly different, and I think we all respect each other's musical tastes as well,” mezzo-soprano Kirstin Maldonado says about the playlist. “It’s exciting to see such an eclectic mix of different music.” Check out some of their picks below. Martin Dupont, “Inside Out” Kirstin: “I’m an ’80s goth gal. I love synth-based music from the ’80s so much because I can tell that the musicians were so excited to get into this new technology. Martin Dupont created these never-before-heard sounds that still, to this day, even with modern electronic music, I'm like, ‘How did they do that?’” Ariana Grande, “shut up” Scott: “It’s magical. I remember listening to it and I was like, ‘I am in, Ari!’ And she produces her own vocals. She comes up with all the harmonies and arranges them. As arrangers and vocalists, harmony people, we respect that so much.” Peter Cetera, “Glory of Love” Kevin Olusola [Pentatonix beatboxer and cellist]: “I love ’80s ballads like Chicago. The arrangements are very orchestral in a way, not necessarily sonically, but arrangement-wise. I come from an orchestral background, so it hits me every single time.”
