At Home With Brandi Carlile: The Playlist

Brandi Carlile was forced to put a halt to her tour when the pandemic hit. “At first it was scary—and then it was this massive feeling of like playing hooky from school,” Carlile tells Apple Music. “The first few shows that got canceled, it was like, ‘Wow, I can plant a garden,’ until I started thinking about other people. Then I went from feeling grateful to guilty in about five seconds.” In the meantime, the country singer-songwriter is hunkered down at home with her wife and their daughters and some of her bandmates. “These are songs we have been listening to for support,” she says of her exclusive Apple Music playlist, which includes a comprehensive range of modern (Brittany Howard, James Blake) and classic (John Prine, Sister Rosetta Tharpe) personal favorites. She’s also been taking comfort from The Beatles, whose “Across the Universe” reminds her to not let anything ruin the things she loves. “I think I've been just needing to tell myself that nothing's going to change my world,” she says. “That I'm going to get on stage again, and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel—that there's an end to this.”
