Anna Calvi’s languid muse is a magpie, swooping down on her favourite noises and weaving them into a glittering sonic nest. Gifted with a powerfully emotive howl, she writes dark and bluesy songs of turmoil, gilded with operatic pop hooks that surge and boil with theatrical intensity (“As a Man”). Acclaimed by early supporter Brian Eno as “the best thing since Patti Smith", she recorded her acclaimed 2011 debut album using vintage equipment, creating a signature wall of sound from surf guitar, flamenco, torch songs and bruising drums.
