Ankur Tewari’s mesmerising indie pop doesn’t feature elaborate arrangements but it speaks volumes. Sharing stripped-down snapshots of the everyday in albums like 2010’s Jannat, he gives his acoustic tales emotional depth with abundant space to breathe. Fronting The Ghalat Family or joining a string of stirring collaborators, he alternates Hindi and Urdu, pop-rock, folk and children’s music in works inspired by romantic relationships, internet trolls or the alphabet. But Tewari is also highly respected in Bollywood. He supervised Gully Boy’s gripping hip-hop-powered soundtrack, among others.
