Angela Hewitt Essentials

Angela Hewitt, who plays a Fazioli piano rather than a Steinway, has built a reputation for her transparent, crisp Bach performances. And so, we begin this playlist with the “Aria” from her celebrated recording of the Goldberg Variations before exploring her early 1986 recording of the Italian Concerto, plus excerpts from The Well-Tempered Clavier and The Art of Fugue. Hewitt is equally spellbinding in Scarlatti and Handel, and has proved herself a leading interpreter of both Mozart and Beethoven. She’s also dipped her toe in less obvious repertoire, from Clara Schumann, Granados, and Chopin to arrangements of songs by Robert Schumann and Richard Strauss.
