Allday: Influences

“All of the songs I chose here were, at some point, my favorite song,” Allday—Tom Gaynor—tells Apple Music of his Influences playlist picks. “Now they are songs I revisit for comfort.” The Adelaide-born, LA-based singer and rapper has come far since his first releases in the early 2010s. As his repertoire expands and his themes mature, emotive traces of folk, indie, and rock can be felt adding depth to his melodic, contemporary sound. “I'm not sure if all these artists can be heard in my music, but they are all there,” he says. Explore his handpicked playlist and read on for more on his favorite tracks. Prince, “I Wanna Be Your Lover” “I love the way music intertwines with memories, songs, and albums. It can transport you back to special moments. This song takes me back to my best friend's 16th birthday party in his garage. I can still hear Prince's funky, ecstatic guitar when I picture it.” Frank Ocean, “Novacane” “‘Novacane’ came out in 2011? Society wasn't ready. I know I wasn't ready. It brings to mind the meme 'giving a Victorian child an energy drink would kill him instantly.' That's how it felt listening to Frank Ocean in 2011.” Kings of Leon, “Trani” “My friendship group in high school could be described as the weird, disobedient kids. Some of us liked hip-hop and some liked rock. Kings of Leon was always playing in cars and backyards. 'Trani' sounds to me like being young, bored, and sunburnt.” MF DOOM, “Potholderz” (Feat. Count Bass D) “I used to listen to this song every morning before school. Splash the face, bowl of Nutri-Grain, a bit of MF DOOM and I'm out the door.” Bob Dylan, “Tangled Up in Blue” “You have to have some laps around the sun before you can understand this one. I won't try to explain what the song means (because a Dylan expert will probably make fun of me for getting it wrong), but I always seem to return to it when my life is changing.” Joni Mitchell, “California” “Joni is almost as good as Bob Dylan at writing songs, but she has a lovely singing voice and he sounds like a chainsaw. I heard 'California' before I'd ever left Australia. Joni's description of Paris, the Grecian Isles, and California captured me. This song still guides my writing. And it convinced me to move to California.” Kanye West, “Through the Wire” “Kanye West had his jaw wired shut after a car crash, then he sampled Chaka Khan's 'Through the Fire' and turned it into 'Through the Wire.' When he says he is a genius, he is not lying. I think this song—and this era of Kanye—informed my songwriting more than almost any other artist.”
