Alfa Rococo Essentials

Francophone duo Alfa Rococo—Justine Laberge and David Bussières—first got together in Quebec in 2004 to write music just for fun. They eventually solidified their partnership with 2007’s Lever l’ancre, an album entrenched in the era’s bright indie-pop sound and rich in catchy choruses. The inherent romantic tension and harmony between Laberge and Bussières (they married in 2014) has consistently informed the full-spectrum emotionality of their work: Chasser le malheur (2010) opts for shadowy textures and darker themes without sacrificing any of the duo’s energy, and they embrace ‘80s synth soundscapes on the optimistic Nos coeurs ensemble (2014). On 2018’s lush, futuristic L’amour et le chaos, they reel between hope and despair in the face of climate anxiety and an uncertain future, but the endless supply of hooks testifies that, regardless of the mood of their hearts, Alfa Rococo pump out irresistible pop.
