Alexandra Stréliski Essentials

Alexandra Stréliski’s 2010 debut LP, Pianoscope, introduced modern classical fans to an engaging new voice among the ranks of rising pianist-composers working in a post-minimalist vein. With her propulsive piano solos, the French-Canadian composer found precedent in Romantic and French Impressionist music, demonstrating a painstaking attention to melodic arcs and formal catharsis. Her critically touted 2018 follow-up, INSCAPE, evinced the strides she had made stylistically through soundtrack work (see HBO’s Sharp Objects) and other projects. Throughout her discography, Stréliski’s ability to meld the vocabularies of pop music, minimalism in the Glass tradition, ruminative 19th-century piano music and folk styles is on full display.
