Al Green’s songwriting retains its soulful core no matter who might be interpreting it. A slinky groove softens the sharper edges of Talking Heads’ “Take Me to the River,” and Sharleen Spiteri of Scottish alt-rockers Texas can’t help but work in some vocal gymnastics for the band’s take on “Tired of Being Alone.” And in the hands of R&B peers First Choice, “Love and Happiness” is nothing short of simmering.
