From trap to cloud rap and even R&B, German rapper and producer Ahzumjot—aka Al Julian Asare-Tawiah—sews a wide fabric of styles into his hip-hop. And whether in his native tongue or in English, his lyrics are often poignant and always heartfelt. He released his first record, Monty, in 2011 after recording and producing it at home; it features songs like the ever-building melody of “Sepia zu Gold”. He’s made more than 15 EPs and albums since then, with standout tracks including 2018’s lo-fi-tinged jaunt “Stunten” and 2022’s “WEIL DU ES LIEBST”, which is as atmospheric as it is direct.
