At the beginning of the '80s, hard rock received a radical makeover when it plowed into heavy metal. Bursting with cold, steely riffs and tight, speeding rhythms, a new rock sound emerged thanks to eardrum-slaying innovators like AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard. As the decade progressed, the sound grew fiercer and more extreme: Check out Guns N' Roses' sleaze-choked ode to urban decadence, “Welcome to the Jungle.” But you can also hear the sound pop up in epic jams like Metallica's “Master of Puppets,” which ingeniously embeds hard-rock hooks into thrash-metal rage.
