Deborah Cox Essentials

She may have been scouted by Clive Davis in the mid-’90s and landed the lead role in the Broadway adaptation of The Bodyguard two decades later, but there’s more to Deborah Cox than Whitney Houston worship. Certainly, the ’80s diva’s influence can be felt on Cox’s 1998 slow-jam smash “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” and the two made for a dream-team duet on the 2000 single “Same Script, Different Cast” (an adult-contemporary answer to Brandy and Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine”). But Cox is also a club girl at heart, courting the dance floor with the funk thump of “Beautiful U R” and Destiny’s Child-worthy sass of “Absolutely Not.”
