Max Richter’s Songs of a Jumping Universe

“Music is a borderless art form—much like human life,” Max Richter tells Apple Music. “The way that things that are seemingly disparate and different can connect is one of the great joys of being around music.” On his Apple Music Chill show Songs of a Jumping Universe, the German-born, England-raised contemporary composer explores the hidden and unexpected connections between different types of music, languages, styles, genres, and cultures. “These are the jumps of the jumping universe,” Richter explains. “Things that maybe feel different, but connect in unexpected and maybe unique ways.” Over the course of five episodes, you’ll hear sounds from all over the world—from the Renaissance and medieval music to electronica, classical, instrumental, and dance music of all sorts—with Richter finding links between all of them. “Music that is very different connects in exciting and special ways, maybe ways that we don’t expect,” he continues. “We can jump between different languages, different perceptions, different cultures of music, and maybe discover that things are maybe more connected than we might think.”
