About Vila Isabel

Founded as a Carnaval bloco by Antônio Fernandes da Silveira, Azul e Branco de Vila Isabel, in the Carnaval of 1947 it became a samba school, Unidos da Vila Isabel. Not much successful in the annual contest, the samba school has been participating in its three divisions. In 1956 it was promoted for the first one after winning the second place with "Três Épocas". In 1960, getting the first place of the third group with "Poeta dos Escravos" it was promoted for the second one. Five years later the school ascended for the first group again with "Epopéia do Teatro Municipal", with which it won the second place. Vila Isabel finally won the championship in 1988, with "Kizomba -- Festa da Raça" (Rodolfo/Jonas/Luiz Carlos), a plot (enredo) by Martinho da Vila, the school's main composer since the mid-60's. ~ Alvaro Neder
