Thomas Vautor

About Thomas Vautor

"The First Set, beeing Songs of Divers Ayres and Natures, of Five and Six Parts, Apt for Viols and Voyces," was a single madrigal volume that contains the extant works of this English composer. Vautor received his Bachelors of Music from Oxford in 1616 and served a number of years for the Duke of Buckingham. A number of his madrigals were composed in the 1590s though his later works in the madrigal volume tend to be more old-fashioned. No single feature can qualify Vautor's works. At times he employed the use of repetition and other times he used declarative stylings and emotive dissonances. Contrapuntal sections by Vautor demonstrate his strength as a composer and some of the madrigals also show his ability to compose less serious and softer works. Some of his madrigals included "Dainty fine bird," "Weepe, weepe, mine eyes," "Sweet Suffolk owle," and "Shepherd and nymphs." ~ Keith Johnson
