About Thomas 'Jaybird' Jones

Thomas "Jaybird" Jones was a Mississippi barrelhouse piano player who accompanied singer Keghouse (probably Gordon Keghouse) on ten sides recorded for Vocalion and OKeh in Memphis, TN, in 1928. He was recorded in the spring of 1941 and again on July 26, 1942, by folklorist Alan Lomax in Clarksdale, MS, playing a series of blues and rag pieces on an out-of-tune piano while Lomax attempts to interview him. The end result is a fascinating push-and-pull interview with musical embellishments, musically flawed (because of the out-of-tune piano) but historically important. ~ Steve Leggett
