About The Jim Howell Band

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Falling asleep to my dad playing our old Lester piano at night after he got home from work. He would play things like Misty or other jazz tunes he had memorized. It was calming and inspired me to plunk around on the piano at an early age. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Horace Silver & The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Weathervanes John Moreland, High on Tulsa Heat I love anything by The Jazz Messengers, Art Blakey is my favorite drummer. Jason Isbell is an inspiration as singer/songwriter. His new album, "Weathervanes", is fantastic. Another great songwriter is John Moreland. "High on Tulsa Heat" is the best. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Lately” I wrote this song in about 10 minutes during the peak of Covid isolation in 2020. I was really trying to be optimistic about the lockdown situation with my two kids missing out on childhood. Its bittersweet. I really love the electric piano groove. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? This past Spring, I conducted a 52 piece philharmonic orchestra version of my song, La Cienega, at the high school where I direct the whole music department. My son was on drum set for it. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I'd love to open for Jason Isbell or Cracker. I have loved Cracker since the early 1990s and seen them several times even getting to chat with them after a small duo show. It'd be cool to open for either group as they both inspire me.
