About Survivor

With a sound that was equal parts power ballads and stadium anthems, pop-rockers Survivor were radio staples and film soundtrack regulars throughout the ’80s. ∙ Before launching Survivor, keyboardist Jim Peterik served as frontman for funk rock outfit The Ides of March, who scored a massive hit in 1970 with the song “Vehicle.” ∙ Sylvester Stallone asked them to write the theme song for Rocky III after hearing their 1981 hit “Poor Man’s Son,” which resulted in the Grammy-winning smash “Eye of the Tiger.” ∙ “The Moment of Truth,” written for 1985’s The Karate Kid, was one of their 20 singles that earned a spot on the Billboard Hot 100. ∙ The Platinum-certified 1984 release Vital Signs produced a trio of hits, including the Adult Contemporary chart-topper “The Search Is Over,” which spent a month at No. 1. ∙ After the band went on hiatus, vocalist Jimi Jamison wrote and recorded “I’m Always Here,” which served as the opening theme for the TV show Baywatch. ∙ Peterik has written for such artists as The Beach Boys, including their comeback hit “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” which was named one of Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Songs of 2012.
