About Steve Lukather

b. Steven Lee Lukather, 21 October 1957, San Fernando Valley, California, USA. Perhaps best known for his accomplished guitar work with AOR supremos, Toto, Lukather started out as a session player. Indeed, the first Toto album was originally intended to be a one-off project and brought together the talents of some of the most notable Californian session musicians. Such was the success of the project that the arrangement soon became permanent and Toto went on to record many albums which adopted varying musical styles and enjoyed fluctuating commercial fortunes. In 1989, Lukather released his first solo album which saw him joined by a whole host of guest players, including fellow guitar maestros Eddie Van Halen and Steve Stevens, Richard Marx on vocals and Jan Hammer on keyboards. Lukather subsequently balanced solo work with his continuing commitments to Toto; his recent live work with the band has seen them once again adopt a heavier musical stance. Lukather’s own live recording with Larry Carlton, 2001’s Grammy Award-winning No Substitutions: Live In Osaka, was particularly fiery.
