About Sha Na Na
Spearheading rock ‘n’ roll revivalism in the late '60s, brothers George and Robert Leonard formed Sha Na Na from the ashes of Columbia University-based vocal group, Columbia Kingsmen. With their choreographed stage act and gold lame suits, Sha Na Na's repertoire was almost exclusively derived from the 1950s. (The band's show-stealing performance at 1969’s Woodstock Festival had them standing out from the throng of hippies.) Their song "Bounce in Your Buggy," from 1972’s THE NIGHT IS STILL YOUNG, was the closest the outfit ever came to a hit. Nevertheless, the band had high profile supporters, including Keith Moon (who compeered a gig for them in 1971) and John Lennon (who chose the band to open his One-For-One charity concert in New York in 1972). The group won their greatest acclaim when they hosted a television show from 1976-81 and appeared in the hit 1978 movie-musical, GREASE. Various line-ups of the band continued to tour and record in subsequent decades.
