About Samuel Joseph Kim

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. As a child, I remember going regularly to the library and spending hours listening to the CDs in their collection. I'd take a stack of albums to the listening booth and spent the day going from album to album learning about every artist. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Low, Things We Lost in the Fire The Notwist, Neon Golden Trentemøller, Obverse Low: this band brings me to the transcendent moment every time. Trentemoller: he fuses together disparate sounds like me so I feel like he's a kindred spirit. Notwist: I can't get enough of their fusion of guitar, melody and electronics. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Receding” This song was written at the height of the COVID pandemic and I was trying to capture the different overwhelming feelings at the time in sound and this is the closest I've ever been. It's a complicated collage of piano loops I played over vocals. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Playing at the Independent in San Francisco when I was in a band there. To take part in that community of artists that played there was special. A close second is watching in a theater my first soundtrack I made to an indie film. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I've learned that life is better when you are open to the future as a possibility and not as a fixed goal to achieve.
