About Rosemary's Billygoat

Los Angeles-based Rosemary's Billygoat is yet another entry in the theatrical rock sweepstakes, with a stage show that includes crucifixion (on a fuzzy crucifix), a "pentagram pizza," fire-breathing, and the impaling of a Barbie doll on a power drill. Band costumes incorporate such items as skulls, bones, fur, and horns. The imagery is straight out of classic gothic rock acts such as Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, and Marilyn Manson. However, Rosemary's Billygoat has a more satirical, self-mocking quality than any of those bands, and their humor puts them closer to the spirit of the Tubes and Spinal Tap. The music is mostly in the alternative metal style, though the Jello Biafra-like delivery of lead singer Mike Odd puts the emphasis on the alternative part of the equation. There is solid musicianship evident behind the buffoonery, particularly in the case of guitarist Neal Gargantua (ex-Nips); drummer Paul Bearer and bassist Pat Trick provide a solid rhythm section. The band's satirical edge is clearly displayed on their debut CD, Cheeses of Nazareth, although the songs don't hold up as well without the visuals and energy of the band's stage act. ~ Mary Grady
