One of the key figures of New Zealand's musical underground, Peter Jefferies represented a third option to the noise experiments of Xpressway Records and the more pop driven fair of the famed Flying Nun label. As with his work alongside his brother Graeme in This Kind of Punishment, Jefferies specialized in shadowy minor key singer-songwriting accented by experimental home recoding touches and bursts of rock inspired noise. The music can be cryptically delicate or soaringly epic; at the heart of Jefferies's work, however, is a mysterious beauty that is perfectly representative of his homeland.
