Oulu Symphony Orchestra

About Oulu Symphony Orchestra

The northernmost orchestra in Finland, the Oulu Symphony Orchestra has a substantial recording catalog of mostly Finnish works. The group has attracted major conductors and guest conductors from beyond Finland. The roots of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra (Finnish: Oulu Sinfonia) date back as far as 1856, when a group of musicians tried to establish a permanent orchestra in Oulu. As of 2022, the orchestra's chief conductor is Rumon Gamba. Under conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the group backed guitarist Timo Korhonen on a recording of concertos by Kimmo Hakola and Toshio Hosokawa. The orchestra's first recording under Gamba, Overtures from Finland, was issued in 2023.
