About Mike Cotton

b. 12 August 1939, London, England. Trumpeter Cotton had led the Mike Cotton Jazzband during the ‘Trad’ craze of the early 60s, but incurred the wrath of purists by increasingly adopting beat-styled material. In 1963 the group, now known as the Mike Cotton Sound, enjoyed a Top 30 entry with ‘Swing That Hammer’, and the following year completed their lone, highly regarded album. The group included Dave Rowberry (b. David Eric Rowberry, 4 July 1940, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England, d. 6 June 2003; keyboards), later of the Animals, and future Argent and Kinks bass player Jim Rodford (b. 7 July 1941, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England), while Johnny Crocker (trombone) Derek Tearle (bass) and Jim Garforth (drums) were among the other musicians featured in its changeable line-up. Vocalist Lucas was added in 1967 as the group switched from jazz-based R&B to soul, but by the end of the decade Cotton had jettisoned its now-anachronistic name, replacing it with Satisfaction. This new aggregation broke up on completing its sole album, following which the trumpeter retained the brass section for session work, notably with the Kinks, whom they supported both live and in the studio throughout the early 70s.
