Scottish post-rock duo Midas Fall incorporate elements of electronica, prog, goth, classical, and alt-rock into their haunting, shimmering, ethereal sound, as on their 2018 album Evaporate. Formed in 2008 in Edinburgh and originally going by the name Merkin, Midas Fall was the brainchild of multi-instrumentalists Elizabeth Heaton (who also contributed vocals) and Rowan Burn. Having met five years previously when they were both playing in other bands, they decided to start writing together after those bands dissolved. Having written an album's worth of material, they threw a band together and went on tour, never expecting it to come to anything. But the response to their genre-straddling music was so enthusiastic that they decided to carry on and signed a deal with Monotreme Records to release their first album, 2010's Eleven: Return and Revert; it was widely acclaimed, drawing comparisons to Portishead and Explosions in the Sky. They toured Europe in support, then moved to Manchester for the writing and production of their second album, 2013's Wilderness. Their third effort, The Menagerie Inside, appeared in 2015. Later they moved to the picturesque tourist town of Oban, on Scotland's west coast. The duo remained the core of the band, collaborating with a perpetually shifting line-up of different support musicians for albums and tours. Their fourth album, 2018's Evaporate, the first written and arranged entirely by on their own, had a more delicate, less rock-based sound. ~ John D. Buchanan
