About Mee-Hae Ryo

Mee-Hae Ryo is a South Korean cellist. She began playing cello at age 6 and received lessons through her middle and high school years. She attended the Juilliard School of Music and graduated from the School of Music at the University of Michigan, where she earned a doctorate. After she won the British Aberdeen International Chamber Festival, the Korean Joong-Ang Ilbo Competition of Music, and the Young Artists Music Competition in Fort Collins, Colorado, she performed extensively across the United States and Europe. Ryo has also appeared as a soloist with the Stratford-upon-Avon Orchestra of the Swan, the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Prague Symphony Chamber Orchestra, the Toronto Philharmonic, the Madeira Classical Players in Portugal, the Kazakhstan National Symphony Orchestra, the Korea Symphony Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Universal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Greek National Symphony Orchestra. She is an accomplished chamber musician and performs with the Korean ensemble, Quartet Noblesse. A late bloomer in the recording world, Ryo made her first album for Deutsche Grammophon at age 46, performing the Saint-Saëns and Elgar cello concertos.
