Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin

About Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin

The Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle is the third-oldest orchestra in Germany. In its modern incarnation, it is associated with the Mecklenburgische Staatstheater opera house. The Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle traces its history back to June 17, 1563, when Duke Johann Albrecht I of the Duchy of Mecklenburg created a Hof-Cantorei (Court Choir) and an associated instrumental ensemble. In the late 18th century, the group, under the direction of Carl August Friedrich Westenholz, gained a wide reputation for high quality. A notable music director during this period was Sophia Westenholz, the wife of Carl and one of very few female conductors active anywhere before the 20th century. Several of its music directors, including Kurt Masur and Klaus Tennstedt, went on to internationally prominent careers. Its music director since 2020 has been Mark Rohde. The group, with Rohde conducting, released an album of works by composer Emilie Mayer.
