Matthias Seuffert

b. 29 January 1971, Kronberg Im Taunus, nr. Frankfurt, Germany. As a child Seuffert listened to classical music and jazz. He learned flute, then clarinet, and was tutored by local jazzman Reimer Von Essen. Influenced by Johnny Dodds on record and Tom Baker and Dan Barrett live, he developed musically and by his mid-teens was playing professionally. Now also playing tenor saxophone, he worked with Claus Jacobi’s band. In 1996 he recorded with Keith Nichols and Bent Persson, including membership of the Blue Rhythmakers. In the early 00s, Seuffert lived in the UK, teaching at Trinity College of Music. In London he worked with Nichols, Alan Barnes, Norman Field, Enrico Tomasso and others. With some of these same musicians he visited the USA where they were joined by Vince Giordano and drummer C.H. ‘Pam’ Pameijer. In Germany in 2004, Seuffert played concerts and recording dates with Nichols. He is co-leader with Alyn Shipton of the Buck Clayton Legacy Band. In 2006, Seuffert recorded with Rossano Sportiello and Harry Allen at the Ascona festival. Among others with whom he has worked are Jon-Erik Kellso, Eddie Locke, Trevor Richards, Frank Robertscheuten, Randy Sandke and Warren Vaché. In 2007, Seuffert joined the European Saxophone Quartet.
