Canadian Christian singer-songwriter Matt Maher earned a scholarship to Arizona State University’s jazz department and paid for his studies by playing piano at a nearby hotel. ∙ Released in 2008, Maher’s Empty and Beautiful hit No. 12 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart, and since then he’s landed five LPs in the Top 10. ∙ He performed for an estimated three million people—including Pope Francis—at Rio de Janeiro’s World Youth Day 2013. ∙ A staple of Christian radio, he’s made the Top 10 of Billboard’s Christian Airplay charts 11 times and scored three No. 1 hits—the first time with 2015’s “Because He Lives (Amen).” ∙ In 2018, he received his first-ever Platinum certification—for the song “Lord, I Need You,” from 2013’s All the People Said Amen. ∙ In addition to his nine Grammy nominations, he’s been nominated for three Juno Awards in his native Canada, winning once—for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year in 2020.
