Essential Albums
- On the ragged, rollicking Kiko, Los Lobos showcase the many sides of roots rock and how Americana and Tex-Mex fusions coalesce. On the one hand, they master heartfelt boleros with poetic poignancy, such as the banjo arpeggio-decorated “Two Janes” and the dusty, countrified “When the Circus Comes.” And on the other, they get down ‘n’ dirty with good-time debauchery, as on the blues-soaked “Whiskey Trail.” The mysterious, hypnotic “Kiko and the Lavender Moon”—with its suspenseful piano keys and insatiable accordion riffs—crowns this masterpiece.
- This has to be the greatest left turn ever. After riding high on the hit “La Bamba,” Los Lobos spurned commercial success and recorded an extraordinary, all-Spanish album that digs its feet into the soil of Mexico. Nobody does son jarocho like these guys: The celestial interplay of the strings on “El Canelo” is a burst of joy, matched by David Hidalgo’s unparalleled tenor. “El Gusto” features ebullient violin and guitar interplay, while the title track can barely contain the soul-splitting emotions of love’s demise.
- On the good-rocking How Will the Wolf Survive?, East L.A.’s Los Lobos solidify Chicano rock, a style steeped in soulful Mexican lore and rollicking Americana. If there’s doubt as to whether Los Tigres del Norte’s norteño ways or Elvis’ rockabilly roots played a role in this honky-tonk outing, “Don’t Worry Baby” quickly confirms both with its bluesy Tex-Mex swagger; so do the polka jams of “Corrido #1” and “Serenata Norteña,” which come equipped with lively tambora rhythms and exciting accordion riffage.

About Los Lobos
Genre-bending Chicano rockers Los Lobos honed their sound playing traditional Mexican folk songs for weddings, quinceañeras, and even baptisms around L.A. for nearly a decade. ∙ Waylon Jennings scored a country hit with a cover of the title track from 1984’s How Will the Wolf Survive, which Rolling Stone named one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. ∙ Their now-iconic version of “La Bamba,” from the 1987 Ritchie Valens biopic of the same name, became the first Spanish-language song to top the Billboard Hot 100. ∙ Hoping to bring Mexican folk music to a wider audience, they honored their norteño roots on 1988’s La Pistola y El Corazón, which won a Grammy and made the Billboard 200. ∙ Now considered a cult classic, their innovative 1992 album, Kiko, earned the band an invitation to perform an altered version of “Kiko and the Lavender Moon” on Sesame Street. ∙ Most of its members have recorded with Los Super Seven, a rotating music collective whose 1998 self-titled debut earned a Grammy Award and hit the Top 10 of Billboard’s Latin Albums chart. ∙ They received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and the BMI Icon Award in 2017, and they were inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in 2018.
