A good early Motown single was "Come Into My Palace" by Lee & the Leopards. The Gordy Records single featured a hokey '50s bass intro and inspired wailing. Lee was Lee Henry Moore, and the Leopards, well, there was Prentiss Anderson and unknowns. Moore, Brian Holland, and William Stevenson composed the April 1962 release that the Supremes redid as a ballad; the Leopards' was an up-tempo novelty. Motown canned the Supremes' version for more than 25 years; Brenda, with sister, Patrice Holloway, waxed a duet version. Ironically, both sides of Lee and the Leopards' Gordy single, the flip was "Trying to Make It," was leased to Laurie Records in 1963, quite odd for Motown to do this, it usually happened the other way around. They cut a Lee Moore tune on Fortune Records in 1964 entitled "Don't Press Your Luck," undersided by "What About Me." Fortune couldn't put the mighty Nolan Strong & the Diablos over the top, so you know Lee & the Leopards didn't have anything coming from the financially strapped label. KZ Records issued a tune or two and they possibly drop one-off singles on other small labels. ~ Andrew Hamilton
