About La Oreja de Van Gogh

La Oreja de Van Gogh is one of the most successful Spanish pop groups of the 21st century, having sold more than eight million albums worldwide. ∙ Started by a group of college friends in 1996, the band released their debut LP, Dile al Sol, two years later and topped the Spanish charts with the singles “Soñaré” and “Cuéntame al Oido.” ∙ They were named Best New Artist at the 1998 Onda Awards—Spain’s preeminent honor for music, radio, and television—and have since won three more times, including twice for Album of the Year. ∙ All eight of La Oreja de Van Gogh’s studio albums have gone to No. 1 in Spain, and 2000’s El Viaje de Copperpot is one of the country’s best-selling LPs of all time. ∙ The group’s 2006 LP, Guapa—their final release with singer Amaia Montero—won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group. ∙ Leire Martínez—a former contestant on the Spanish show Factor X—became the band’s new singer in 2008, first appearing on A las Cinco en el Astoria. ∙ “Confía en el Viento,” a track created for the 2019 animated film Elcano y Magallanes: La Primera Vuelta al Mundo, earned the group a Goya nomination for Best Original Song.
